Why do witches fly on brooms?

The witch's flight and the supposed fact that witches can fly on brooms or similar household objects are one of the best known surviving parts of the folk beliefs surrounding the masters of magic. Especially with the publication of the Hexenhammer from 1486 on, this superstition spread quickly. Why the broom, of all things, was ultimately chosen as the flying object has not been conclusively explained.
